Found thanks to Max Niederhofer’s blog. Amazing Commencement address from JK Rowling’s to Harvard Class of 2008. I love Commencement address because they are great views on life.

This one is great because it’s about failure redoing again and the power of imagination that enables to edit real world !!

PS: Max was at seedcamp Paris (didn’t manage to find the time to talk to him, despite my wish because I’ve been reading his blog for quite a long time). Seedcamp was about imagination and failure too (We tried as mentors to prevent some but we know that we will fail too ;-D and that those failing entrepreneurs will learn a lot too.) Good speech… let’s start again with a shadoks’ motto :

In trying continuously one eventually succeed. Thus, the more it fails the more likely one has that it works.

En essayant continuellement on finit par réussir. Donc: plus ça rate plus on a de chances que ça marche.

Just received that email from facebook.

Hello,
You made one or more wall posts that violated our Terms of Use. Among other things, posts that are hateful, threatening, or obscene are not allowed. We also take down posts that attack an individual or group, or advertise a product or service. Continued misuse of Facebook’s features could result in your account being disabled.
If you have any questions or concerns, you can visit our FAQ page at http://www.facebook.com/help.php?topic=wposts.

The Facebook Team

This thing is obviously boot generated but… 2 questions:<

  • Why ? …. Someone probably flagged a comment or a note i made.
  • Where ? … I have no indication what so ever of the “edit” I’ve made that generated such a reaction. And that’s probably the worse, not being able to identify my  allegedly bad behavior.

Two weeks ago i received a Copyright infringement from youtube :

Nous avons supprimé ou désactivé l’accès au contenu suivant suite à une notification de Tandem Films qui a signalé qu’ils contreviennent à : How my cat wake me up: http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=gZlgU6twZ0U

I knew where I made a mistake but better than anything it make me discover the original producer of that video that I loved and uploaded but that didn’t mentioned the producer.

Conclusion: infringement on youtube makes you better, whereas on Facebook it makes your more interrogative and probably a bit dumber (because of this non knowledge)

So here we are, back to blogging.

I took a blogging break and used the time to edit stuff around. One of them was/is to edit the real world, and for that I’ve used couchsurfing.

I’ve registered on couchsurfing the 8 august of last year, just after coming back from barcelona where I really enjoyed the “The Spanish Apartment” spirit maybe because it was an even better breath of fresh air after 5 months at the office.

First, Ive spent some time in the community, discovering the behaviours, the groups (opted for Lomo & photography and for practical purpose paris). Discovering the signs for trust and the way contribution was possible.

Then as soon as my new flat was available, I started hosting… and actually meeting people. From abroad and from paris, even people close to me (hi, Emmanuel). On average the ratio of very nice encounters is a lot better than with my local life and the least interesting experience was nevertheless a fairly nice evening (speaking about california).

500 000 members on couchsurfing logo

We are now 500 000 members. France is the second country with 44,159 members but first in share of national population. Here are the stats of the day.

  • CouchSurfers 517,516
  • Successful Surfings (approx) 406,659
  • Friendships Created (approx) 514,633
  • Positive Experiences (approx) 808,689

TV helped a lot and like always it has an impact on behaviours. That’s part of the growth process. Digg dealed with it, some other start-up are currently crossing the chasme…. Paul Lamere describes it as the biggest challenge of last.fm.

I am now also a surfer … and i am confident for couchsurfing. but we’ll see.

Here are my first real edits. Pictures taken in cities where I’ve couchsurfed, video mixing done by animoto.

I was working on my hall of fame this morning and especially on Steve Reich.
If you follow this blog you know that i am a hug fan of him. I’ve posted about it several times (Piano Phase, Daniel Variation, Eight lines)

And today I’ve found this video :

One line shocked me (exegetic shock) : "And they turned this piece into something of lifestyle"
That’s exactly what I have done over the past 4 years while listening to Reich nearly every week (Most scrobbled artist ;-).

That’s also what I have done with photography over the last 8 years :

Mon mur de photos

That’s also what i’ve done with U.[lik]
and my virtual identity.

Life is now about adhesion …. remixing the past for the better. Share feelings and build a deeper me.

It’s brilliant. More and more complex subjects are easily exposed thanks to smart and well written mockumentaries. I do love the web more and more each days. Complex ideas find their path to brain more easily ….

So yahoo just launched live. it’s overcrowded and therefore down at the moment. Anyway, i’ve been defending yahoo since more than 1 year as they entered the "you suck" part of their life. I love this company, they probably have the better sense of what USER (people using the web) want. They do have some troubles like today … but Yahoo you got my love ;-D

So here is the launching video for live :

And you’ll find the not working screen on my flickr

Occurrence of the term "Social Objects" is increasing a lot in recently. Jaiku Founder, Jyri Engstrom’s who first published idea on the subject of "Social Objects"  has a nice synopsis inspired by Karin Knorr Cetina (One of the best presentation read in a long time).

So what are these social objects ?? McLeoad definition is the following :

The Social Object, in a nutshell, is the reason two people are talking
to each other, as opposed to talking to somebody else. Human beings are
social animals. We like to socialize. But if think about it, there
needs to be a reason for it to happen in the first place. That reason,
that "node" in the social network, is what we call the Social Object.

U.[lik] like Flickr, Wordie, Librarything, watzatsong …etc are all networks build on social objects. They are about content with people inside. I do believe they will have the lion share of social activities in the future because people will be able to aggregate them (but that’s another story). Our socialization patterns are changing at an incredible pace and here are two idea and two excellent drawings that show the importance of social objects that can even be seen in evolution of the marital matches (using meetic or any other social places because social is also dating and sex)

Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers in a ESSAY ABOUT MARIAGE AND THE MARKET concluded :

So what drives modern marriage? We believe that the answer lies in a
shift from the family as a forum for shared production, to shared
consumption. In case the language of economic lacks romance, let’s be
clearer: modern marriage is about love and companionship. Most things
in life are simply better shared with another person: this ranges from
the simple pleasures such as enjoying a movie or a hobby together, to
shared social ties such as attending the same church, and finally, to
the joint project of bringing up children. Returning to the language of
economics, the key today is consumption complementarities-activities
that are not only enjoyable, but are more enjoyable when shared with a
spouse. We call this new model of sharing our lives “hedonic marriage”.

Mc Leaod has some interesting thoughts on this new social matching if we take them on a very shallow level (it made me laugh at loud ;-D). Social Markers are a prime form of social shorthand, that people use to STAKE OUT the ecosystem they’re occupying.

This is a nice piece on friendship: friending ancient or otherwise ?

“With social networks, there’s a fascination with intimacy because
it simulates face-to-face communication,” Dr. Wesch says. “But there’s
also this fundamental distance. That distance makes it safe for people
to connect through weak ties where they can have the appearance of a
connection because it’s safe.”

And while tribal cultures
typically engage in highly formalized rituals, social networks seem to
encourage a level of casualness and familiarity that would be
unthinkable in traditional oral cultures. “Secondary orality has a
leveling effect,” Dr. Strate says. “In a primary oral culture, you
would probably refer to me as ‘Dr. Strate,’ but on MySpace, everyone
calls me ‘Lance.’ ”

And if you can read french I also advice that you take a look at this article about tribal rituals.
