Last publication of Forbes is dedicated to networks.
It’s a must read… each subject is written by the guy in charge !
Network economy : Robert Metcalfe (download teh article : Téléchargement the_real_stars.pdf)
YouToo : Chad Hurley
Building a network : CEO of Fedex
Seth Godin , John Doerr, Howard Dean …
And a very good one from Netflix CEO (talking also about the netflix prize) called The Real Stars : Téléchargement it_s_all_in_your_head.pdf
Good reading, it’s worth the 10 minutes especially the Metcalfe one … and give time to the singularity is near
Mapping is taking a larger space in strategic representation ! It’s nice because it’s quick and you can put a lot of data inside. I love mapping. I found a great post from apophenia on this subject.
First a global map of online communities (click on it to enlarge). Avc used it to illustrate the fact that Microsoft is looking to buy Yahoo. Probably the right strategy even if I think that Yahoo is in a better situtation that always illustrated (closer to the sea of culture).
But the post links to an even better one. Internet companies are compared to countries. It’s fun, abrasive and probably the best series of comments i’ve read for a very long time. So let me summarize

MSFT = Germany
YHOO = Japan (I agree : MITI Strategy ! And they are mis-looked as canada)
GOOG = USA
– and from the comments –
SUN = France
Apple = Netherlands
CSCO = Russia

2006 was the year people benchmarked Pandora vs Last.fm
Something that will be impossible this year. Pandora will shut out non-US user tonight !
It’s very sad, but it will force a market regulation since pandora will need to act & lobby to find a solution (global or local … pandora will therefore open the trail for followers, that’s the only good side effect).
Pandora operates under Section 114 of the DMCA, which gives them a clear process for paying rights holders in the U.S. There is no international equivalent of the DMCA, and so to operate legally in other countries, Pandora must sign deals with rights holders directly. That means separate deals with labels and publishers for each song, an extremely difficult and time consuming task.

"Netflix is at Mix07 and they showed a very cool demo of their next version of Watch Now, which is built on Silverlight." VOD is getting closer ! Good news.
Thay are also working on two people seeing the same movie and tchating in the same time !! And during the demo (just below) they ask one question when sharing the movie. In which movie do you like Sean connery more? I love Netflix… they are paving the way.
